HMIs of Agricultural Machines for 2016

The University of Osnabrück invited me to give a talk about “HMIs of Agricultural Machines for 2016” at their COALA Symposium “Assistance Systems and Human-Machine Communication in Agricultural Engineering on October 30, 2014. Here is the abstract of the talk.

Abstract

It is not too late to start the development of a driver terminal for the 2016 season – with a public presentation at Agritechnica in autumn 2015. I’ll show how Krone managed to have a first prototype of the driver terminal of its new Big X 480/580 in the field after only 2.5 months – with one software developer and one UI designer – and how they had the terminal on the market after 21 months – with two additional software developers.

Being fast to the market is a must, but so is the development of the “right” product. I’ll outline what features will make the HMI of a driver terminal competitve in 2016 and beyond. It will be interesting to see which trends from the automotive industry (think in-vehicle infotaiment systems and instrument clusters) are relevant for agricultural machines and which are not.

Here are the slides of my presentation (in German):

“… with one software developer and one UI designer …” Impressive. I was involved in a similar effort in a large ag manufacturer and we used a lot (a lot!) more development staff. And maybe weren’t as fast to market.
